Since the age of ten, after I learned to speak English as a second language, I have written in a diary almost every single day. Writing was a way I could express my sadness, fears, worries, happiness, good and bad experiences, and anything else I wanted to keep to myself because I was too afraid or ashamed to share with anyone else. As you can imagine, I have accumulated quite a few diaries through the years consisting of my secret thoughts and feelings!
When I became a Christian in my twenties, I continued to keep my thoughts in writing and called it a journal instead of a diary. Writing in my journal became a way I connected with God. It has been one of the most powerful ways for me to communicate with Him on the daily. Flipping through the pages of my diaries, you’ll find they are overflowing with conversations between God and me. Through journaling, I am able to express hurts, vent about disappointments, and ask God tough questions about matters I didn’t understand or felt unsafe telling another human being. The words are so very personal and private, yet they are willingly and openly shared because they are nuggets of God’s wisdom from my faith journey to encourage Christians to live like Christ and to help the “not yet” Christians see their need for Him.
These writings are not for the faint of heart or fake in faith. They are raw and real, dealing with the struggles of life. They bring up the problem of sin in our hearts, which are necessary for us to address if we are to truly know God personally for ourselves and to grow up in our faith or mature spiritually, so we will honor God in how we live and have a life-changing impact on those around us.
My prayer is for you to grow authentic faith by connecting to the God who created you and who loves you so much He died to save the precious life He gave you.
